Henry Flagler arrived in the area, known today as Palm Beach in the 1890s. He called the area “a veritable paradise” and believed it had the potential of being an attractive area for tourist. In 1893 he began construction of the “Hotel Royal Poinciana”, the largest resort in the world at the time. Flagler originally intended for West Palm Beach to serve as a residential area for the workers of the hotel. In 1983, George Potter platted the original 48 blocks of the area and West Palm Beach was incorporated as a town. By 1904, Palm Beach County was established.
Today, aside for being known for its sunny palm-lined beaches, West Palm Beach is home to world class shopping and entertainment districts, including, CityPlace, Clematis Street, Antique Row, and Northwood Village.
